As talented as she is beautiful, meet Australia’s latest actress on the ascent…
Supernatural is a good word for Phoebe Tonkin. Although the Aussie actress is as friendly, chatty, down-to-earth as any girl next door, she looks like no one we’ve seen before. Stunning doesn’t do her justice. And then there’s the whole playing a werewolf thing, too.
“It’s funny, my last three big TV roles have been set in mystical worlds,” says Tonkin, who first found an audience as a mermaid in kids’ show H2O: Just Add Water. “But it’s a coincidence – I swear I don’t seek out that kind of character.”
After H2O and a requisite appearance in Home & Away, Tonkin left her native Sydney and landed a role on US series Secret Circle playing – you guessed it – a witch. It survived just one season, though network execs at the CW clearly spotted something in Tonkin, finding her a role in The Vampire Diaries.
“It helps to have friends in high places,” jokes Tonkin. “But they treat you like family and if they enjoy working with you, they’re happy to find something else for you.”
