Vogue Australia: Add to Cart with Phoebe Tonkin

In an effort to inspire your shopping habits, Add to Cart is here to give you a rare glimpse at the carefully-curated wish lists compiled by your favourite local It girls.

Whether you first become acquainted with 33-year-old Australian actress Phoebe Tonkin way back when she appeared as mermaid Cleo Sertori in H2O: Just Add Water, recognise her from her lead role as werewolf Hayley Marshall in The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, or have simply spotted her quintessentially Australian style front row at countless Chanel shows, there’s no denying the star has an inescapable presence.

Currently based in Brisbane, Tonkin has returned home to feature in the Netflix adaptation of the international best-selling novel Boy Swallows Universe, written by fellow Australian Trent Dalton. Thankfully, that means we’re about to see a whole lot more of her. “I was given the book for Christmas by my mum in 2019,” she says of the first time she read the coming-of-age tale. “I am so unbelievably grateful to be part of this show. It has been an incredible experience so far.”

While her acting credits are enough to establish Tonkin as an international success, her resume doesn’t end there. Ever the multi-hyphenate, the homegrown beauty has previously dabbled as a model, helmed a holistic health site alongside long-time friend Teresa Palmer, launched a sustainable loungewear brand called Lesjour! and tried her hand at both screenwriting and directing. Now, she’s lent her editorial eye to local denim label, Rolla’s. Together, the pair have crafted a capsule collection emblematic of the inspiration each draws from pre-loved fashion.

“I love, love vintage clothing,” Tonkin tells Vogue of her approach to dressing, which also sees her rely heavily on the foolproof formula of classic blue jeans and quality white T-shirts. “My style really hasn’t changed that much in the last eight years or so,” she adds. “Rolla’s has a ’70s-cut blue denim pair [of jeans] from [my] collection called Dusters Bootcut in Brad Blue that I love. I’m also loving their rib tanks and camis which are cut in a very ’90s style to complete the effortless look.”

As for who she looks to when stuck on what to wear, Tonkin reveals she’s lucky to be surrounded by a plethora of incredibly fashionable friends who never fail to inspire her. “Ilona Hamer, Lara Worthington, Christine Centenera,” she names just a few. “I also like this Instagram account called @simplicitycity.” Here, the former Vogue Australia cover star gives us a sneak peek at everything from her wardrobe to her wish list, so that you too can call on an It girl for the ultimate inspiration.
