The Famous Friend Who Approves Phoebe Tonkin’s Fashion Purchases

How would you describe your style?
Classic, comfortable, not too structured. My go-to uniform is jeans, white T-shirt, a nice sweater and a good pair of boots.

What is the oldest thing in your wardrobe?
My favourite, most meaningful pieces are two beautiful, hand-knitted Jenny Kee sweaters my mum got when she was my age and passed down to me.

And the most recent addition?
A pair of vintage Levi’s jeans.

What would you wear …

… on a first date? A dress.

… on a plane? Sweatpants, hoodie, ballet flats and an extra shirt to wear when I get off. I definitely value comfort over style when I travel.

… to the Oscars? Chanel.

What’s your favourite fashion era?
I’m an ’80s girl. I love that late ’80s/early ’90s New York kind of vibe: big earrings, shoulder pads, big hair and denim. My new favourite for going out is jeans and a sweater with these really big drop earrings I bought from Scanlan Theodore.

Do you have a favourite fragrance?
Souq by Ayu.

Can you remember a favourite outfit you wore as a child?
My best friend Lily and I used to wear matching dresses; there was one when we were about five with yellow and green flowers all over it. Recently our mums went to Bali and found a dress that was very similar in adult sizes. We have a photo of us at 30 in almost the same dress as when we were little girls. It’s very cute.

What are three essential items in your wardrobe?
Jeans – I like a classic bootleg cut – a good sweater and boots. I never wear heels, so I love the R.M.Williams “Adelaide” boots. They have a little bit of height but don’t make me feel like I’m going to teeter over.

What was your first fashion moment?
When I was about eight, I sat on Santa’s lap and when he asked me what I wanted for Christmas I told him a white cardigan. It was very strange, my mum was very confused. But I am still wearing cardigans 22 years later. I’m actually waiting on a cardigan from Zara in the mail.

And your worst fashion mistake?
When I first moved to Los Angeles in 2011, I was invited to the Twilight premiere. Victoria’s Secret was big and all the girls were wearing Hérve Léger bandage dresses. I thought it would be really cool and sexy to wear one with a leather jacket. I will never live that outfit down. It was horrible.

What would you buy if money were no object?
Some big, bold diamond earrings to wear with jeans and a sweater.

What would you never wear?
Fluoro colours.

Is there a current trend you like?
Maybe I’m too old but I’m very into that look Hailey Bieber’s been wearing – sweatpants with sneakers and white socks, a big jacket and a Yankees hat.

Who’s your favourite fashion icon?
Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. I also look to Lara Worthington. I rarely buy anything without sending her a screen shot to get her approval.

What is your favourite look for a casual Sunday?
Matching pyjamas: I love Masini & Chern or Haven. I love spending Sunday morning in a nice pair of PJs.
