Harper’s Bazaar Australia: Get ready for CHANEL Cruise 2023 with Phoebe Tonkin

The star shares her beauty rituals, travel tips and advice for Aussies in LA.

ON MAY 9, the who’s-who of Hollywood returned to Los Angeles for CHANEL’s Cruise 2023 presentation. A night filled with dancing, fashion and sequin-clad rollerbladers, the show was truly one for the books. But, it wasn’t just the American stars who drew attention on the night. Several notable Aussies were in attendance, bringing a touch of ineffable Australian charm to the front row. Among them, Margot Robbie, Gabriella Brooks, BAZAAR’s very own Editor-in-Chief Jillian Davison, and esteemed actor, Phoebe Tonkin.

Ahead of the show, we caught up with Tonkin as she got ready, to talk all things CHANEL, travel and what it’s like to be in Aussie in LA.

Harper’s BAZAAR: You’re a Los Angeles local, what do you love about the LA?
Phoebe Tonkin: I love how every pocket of LA has a different energy. I love being able to hike the mountains and then drive down to the beach for a swim. Even though LA is quite transient, I feel very grounded here. I love going to the same restaurants and visiting the same parks.

HB: What tips would you give an Aussie visiting or moving to LA?
PT: I would say get used to driving on the highways, and that most strip mall Japanese restaurants are way better than any of the fancy ones on the big streets.

HB: You travel quite often for work. Do you have any travelling tips?
PT: I am terrible at packing. But I have gotten my skin care and make up routine down. I always make sure I have a pair of jeans, ballet flats, a big black sweater and a mini dress for an impulsive night out.

HB: What’s your favourite thing about attending runway shows? Do you have any friends attending you’re excited to see?
PT: It sometimes feels like CHANEL summer camp; I love seeing the same faces every time. Often we’ve travelled to different counties together and it’s always fun to catch up at the shows.

HB: From your morning routine to hair and makeup, what did your day look like preparing to attend the show?
PT: I had a facial with Melanie grant, and a wonderful manicure. I usually meditate before hair and make up and put on Taylor Swift.

HB: What’s the best beauty tip you’ve picked up along the way?
PT: Water water water. Also dunking your face in ice in the hotel bathroom sink with cold water.

HB: Can you talk us through your look for the show?
PT: I wore a gorgeous knit cardigan and mini skirt, with Mary Janes and coco crush jewellery. The gold felt appropriate for the event. I love attending the CHANEL show because you really see Virginie’s wonderful pieces styled so perfectly to her guests’ personal style.

HB: How does CHANEL align with your personal style?
PT: I love wearing CHANEL with little makeup, a lip and not too polished hair. I am always influenced by the collections and will definitely be taking inspiration from the hair and make up in this cruise collection.

HB: How would you describe the ‘CHANEL woman’?
PT: Sophisticated and elegant, but with a sense of playfulness and fun.
